A practical, India-specific guide to stacking cashback with coupon codes and bank offers, and the small habits that quietly void it.
Always start from CashJosh, not the store
This is the one rule everything else depends on. Cashback only tracks if your order originates from a CashJosh "Shop & Earn" click, not from a bookmark, a Google search result, or the store's own app opened separately. If you're mid-checkout on a store and realise you forgot to go through CashJosh first, the safest move is to abandon the cart, click through from CashJosh, and check out again.
Compare cashback rates before you compare prices
Most shoppers pick a store first and only think about cashback afterward. Flip that order. Before you decide where to buy something, check all stores sorted by highest cashback, if two stores sell what you need, the cashback rate can matter more than a small price difference, especially in categories like personal care and D2C brands, where rates often run 8-12%, versus electronics, where 1-3% is typical because retail margins are thinner.
Time big purchases around sale season
Indian e-commerce has a fairly predictable sale calendar, the Republic Day sale in January, Independence Day sales in August, and the festive season around Diwali (October-November) are when most retailers run their deepest discounts. Cashback is calculated on whatever you actually pay, so a 30% storewide discount plus your usual cashback rate is strictly better than buying at full price any other week. If you're planning a large purchase (electronics, jewellery, furniture), it's almost always worth waiting for one of these windows.
Stack, don't choose: coupon codes + cashback + bank offers
These three savings layers don't compete with each other:
- A coupon code is applied at the store's checkout and reduces what you pay.
- CashJosh cashback is calculated on that final, discounted price, so a bigger coupon discount doesn't reduce your cashback percentage.
- Bank instant-discount offers (card cashback, no-cost EMI) are applied by your bank, separately from both of the above.
Using all three on the same order is normal, not a loophole.
Category-specific things to know
- Electronics and appliances: lower headline percentages, but on a ₹50,000+ order even 1-2% is real money. Confirmation windows run long (60-90 days) since retailers wait out their return period.
- Fashion: rates are usually higher (3-10%), but so is the return rate, so confirmation can take 75-100+ days. A straight size exchange usually doesn't affect your cashback; a return does.
- D2C brands (skincare, wellness, grooming): often the highest rates on the platform, since these brands run their own affiliate programs directly rather than sharing margin with a marketplace.
- Finance products (bank accounts, cards, loans): pay a fixed rupee bounty instead of a percentage, for a verified new account or approved application, not for browsing or partial applications.
Track Pending vs. Confirmed, don't panic at the wait
Every order lands in your wallet as Pending first. It moves to Confirmed, and becomes withdrawable, once the store reports the sale as final, generally after its own return window closes. This is normal and not a sign anything went wrong; the How It Works page has the full mechanics if you want the details.
The habits that quietly void cashback
- Opening the store's app fresh after clicking through from CashJosh on mobile, instead of letting the link hand off into the app directly.
- Using an aggressive ad-blocker or privacy extension that strips tracking parameters from the link before it reaches the store.
- Clicking a different, unrelated coupon or cashback link right before checkout: the last tracked click before you pay is usually the one that gets credit, so a stray click elsewhere can knock CashJosh out of the chain.
- Closing the tab and coming back hours later by searching the store directly rather than re-clicking through CashJosh, tracking cookies do expire, so same-session checkout is safest.
None of these are complicated to avoid once you know about them, the short version is: click "Shop & Earn," check out in that same session, and don't second-guess it with another coupon site along the way.
