How Does Cashback Work in India? A Plain-English Guide (2026)

CashJosh EditorialΒ·Aug 26, 2026 9 min read

What cashback actually is, how tracking works behind the scenes, why it sits Pending, and how to make sure yours lands in your wallet β€” explained without the jargon.

Cashback sounds simple until you actually try to explain it β€” where does the money come from, why does it take weeks to show up, and is a site paying you back on every order too good to be true? Here's the plain-English version, with the actual mechanics.

Cashback is a shared commission, not a discount

When a store wants more customers, it pays a commission to whoever sends the customer its way β€” that's the core of affiliate marketing, and it's been running quietly behind most e-commerce for two decades. A cashback platform like CashJosh is simply on the customer's side of that arrangement: instead of keeping the commission, we share most of it back with you.

That has one important consequence: cashback never changes the price you pay. You check out on the store's own site, at the store's own price, in the store's own currency of INR β€” the commission is calculated and paid separately, after the fact, by the store to us to you. If you ever see a site claiming its cashback comes from a "special discount," that's not how affiliate cashback actually works.

What happens between your click and your order

  1. You click "Shop & Earn" on a store's CashJosh page. This opens the store's own website or app through a tracked link β€” no login, no separate account with the store required.
  2. A tracking ID rides along with that click, invisibly, all the way to checkout.
  3. You shop and pay exactly as you normally would. Nothing about the checkout looks different.
  4. The store reports the sale back to us, usually within a day or two, tagged with that same tracking ID β€” this is what lets us match your specific order to your CashJosh account without ever seeing your payment details.
  5. Cashback appears as Pending in your wallet, calculated on what you actually paid.

The one rule that makes all of this work: start every purchase from the "Shop & Earn" link, in the same browsing session. Closing the tab and going back to the store directly, switching from browser to app mid-session, or clicking through a different coupon site afterward can all break the tracking ID before it reaches checkout β€” which is the single most common reason cashback doesn't show up (more on that in our cashback not credited troubleshooting guide).

Why cashback sits "Pending" instead of landing instantly

This is the part that trips people up most. Every store has a return and cancellation window β€” 15 days, 30 days, sometimes longer. Until that window closes without a return, the sale isn't truly final from the store's side, so the commission isn't final either. That's exactly what "Pending" means: the cashback is real and calculated, it's just waiting for the store's own return window to close.

Once it does, the store confirms the sale to us, and your cashback flips from Pending to Confirmed β€” at which point it's withdrawable. We've written a full breakdown of what each status actually means and how long the wait typically is.

Roughly, based on live data across CashJosh's partner stores:

| Category | Typical confirmation window | Why |

|---|---|---|

| Beauty & personal care | ~45–65 days | Shorter return cycles once a product is opened |

| Electronics | ~60–90 days | Standard electronics return-window policies |

| Finance (cards, accounts, loans) | ~60–90 days | Verifying the account/application stays active |

| Travel | ~60–90+ days | Some platforms wait until after the travel date |

| Fashion & sportswear | ~75–106 days | Long return/exchange windows are the norm |

These are ranges, not guarantees β€” the exact number for any store is always shown on that store's own page and in your wallet.

Does a coupon code cancel out my cashback?

No, they stack. A coupon code is a separate, additional discount applied at the store's own checkout β€” cashback is calculated on whatever you end up actually paying after that discount, so using both together is strictly better than using either alone. We've written a full comparison of cashback vs. coupon codes if you want the deeper mechanics of stacking both with bank-card offers too.

Getting your cashback out: withdrawals

Once cashback is Confirmed, it moves from "Pending" balance into your withdrawable wallet balance. From there:

  • Withdraw to UPI, bank transfer, or a gift card, depending on which methods are enabled.
  • Some methods have a minimum withdrawal threshold β€” your Confirmed balance simply accumulates until you hit it.
  • Only one withdrawal request can be pending at a time, for accounting and security reasons.
  • Once your cumulative payouts cross a threshold (β‚Ή20,000), Indian tax rules require PAN/KYC verification before we can keep paying out β€” add this once in Account settings and it's a one-time step.

Is this actually safe?

A legitimate cashback platform never asks for your card number, bank PIN, or UPI PIN β€” the only thing it does is redirect you to the store's real checkout, where you enter your details directly with the store, same as always. If a site is ever asking you to enter payment credentials on its own pages, that's not how cashback tracking works and is a red flag. We cover this in more detail on our About page, including our registered office and full policies.

Quick FAQ

Does cashback work on every order?

Generally yes, but stores commonly exclude gift cards, store-credit top-ups, and occasionally clearance/outlet listings β€” check the specific store's page for any exclusions.

What if I return my order?

Cashback is calculated on the final, kept amount β€” a full return typically voids the cashback for that order; a partial return reduces it proportionally.

Can ad blockers break tracking?

Yes β€” an ad blocker or cookie blocker can strip the tracking parameters before they reach the store's checkout. If an order doesn't show as Pending within a day or two, that's the first thing to check.
